Rooftop units (RTUs) on restaurants, shops and light-industrial buildings are usually set by crane, because they're heavy and have to land precisely on a curb. HVAC contractors usually book the crane, but building owners sometimes do too.
What the crane provider needs
- Unit model and operating weight (on the submittal sheet)
- Building height and how far the curb is from where the crane can set up
- Whether the old unit comes off on the same lift (two picks)
- Parking-lot access, overhead lines, and whether the lot is open to traffic
- Early-morning or weekend preference, to avoid customers
